When scheduling an appointment, we first like to verify any insurance carrier we would be billing so as to not surprise you with an unexpected bill for services.

After the insurance is verified we will then schedule you for a time that is convenient for your schedule, allowing adequate time to thoroughly provide a thorough cleaning and exam by our dental team.

In addition, we offer our patients an Oral Cancer Screening, something that your primary care physician does not provide. We will also take any X-rays that are required. This appointment usually takes about 60-90 minutes and will provide a great baseline for caring for your oral health!

Amalgam or Resin: Which is Best?

There are a lot of factors to consider when you and your dentist decide on which type of restoration is recommended. Whether to restore using resin or amalgam depends on your age, if you have a restoration already in place, your budget, and the overall health of the tooth.

Resin is often the preferred solution for teeth within the smile zone because it lends itself to a more aesthetic appearance. The tooth is also believed to more greatly benefit from resin’s flexibility than from a rigid amalgam.

While smaller cavities are excellent candidates for resin restorations, while larger cavities are often filled with amalgam. An amalgam filling is a more affordable restoration and one that most insurance companies generally cover in full. Resin restoratives are covered in-part or in-full. Both types of restorations possess excellent durability.

If there were a quick and painless way to identify pre-cancerous cells in the mouth of someone
you loved, would you want them to try it? What if that person were you? The truth is, as uncomfortable
as it may be to even think of the word “cancer,” thinking about it, and thus detecting it
early, is key. That’s why, if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, you should schedule a visit,
because while the oral exam that accompanies your cleaning may not be noticeable to you, it’s
often your earliest line of defense in the detection of oral cancer.
Lets take a quick look at a few of the risk factors and symptoms, and consider a few options you
may have to help reduce risk. Keep in mind that no list is exhaustive, and to always share with
each of your health care providers your concerns and strategies regarding your oral health.
Those at Risk for Oral Cancer
Passing certain age thresholds and engaging in certain lifestyle habits can place you at increased
risk for oral cancer. For example, men tend to have higher rates of oral cancers than women.
Here is the short list:
· Patients age 40 and older (95% of all oral cancer cases)
· Patients age 18-39 who use tobacco, are heavy drinkers, or may have a previously diagnosed
oral HPV infection.

Alzheimer Award

We are so very proud of Team Kearney’s Alzheimer’s fundraiser. Our team came in 3rd in the City of Colorado Springs for Business and Organization Teams and exceeded our goal. Colorado Springs exceeded its overall goal of $230,000, with $252,700 and $3,000 in pledges. Dr. Kearney was named a member of the Grand Champions which is for people who personally raise $1,000 or more. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia among older people. AD usually begins after age 60. Your risk is also higher if a family member has had the disease. No treatment can stop the disease.

Fall Happenings

The days are getting shorter and mother nature gave us a little taste of winter earlier this week. We have October as Breast Cancer Month; November 4th we set our clocks back one hour and we are constantly being reminded how many days, weeks, Fridays, till Christmas. Lets all of us take a deep breath and simply “stop and smell the roses.” With that said, how are your dental benefits? Are you paying more for insurance than you receive in benefits.
